Built in the early 1800's as a stagecoach stop, the inn has also been rumored to have been home to an early dental practice (Ouch!). The authentic post and beam architecture and wide plank floors which are evident throughout reflect the expert craftsmanship of the Federal period. The large barn and silo base, now used to raise the American flag, are reminiscent of its early farming roots. The main building is currently listed on Vermont's Historic Register and is certified as a "Green Hotel in the Green Mountain State."
Purchased in 1985, Debra and Jim caringly restored and transformed their home and farm into a very comfortable Bed and Breakfast offering travelers the opportunity to experience a way of life that is becoming harder to find. Sheep, horses, a goat, chickens, rabbits, cats, dogs and assorted rodents have all played a part at one time or another in adding to the charm of Johnnycake Flats. Currently, in residence, are two border collies, named Brumby and Lila, a cat named Timothy and many chickens being raised as poultry. Debra is an award winning quilter, gardener, nature enthusiast and tele skier. Jim, too, is a tele skier, a basketball fanatic and a skilled Mr. 'Fix-it'. And we both love to travel!
Johnnycake Flats is 16 acres of field, farmland, forest, frog ponds, organic veggie gardens, flowers, deck and screened-in porch to enjoy, paint or photograph. Guests are welcome to use the inn's snowshoes, sleds, daypacks, coolers, horseshoes, BBQ grill and campfire pit... so come, unwind and experience the peacefulness and natural beauty that abound in our special corner of Vermont!
