About the Inn

Built in the early 1800’s as a stagecoach stop, the inn has also been rumored to have been home to an early dental practice (Ouch!). The authentic post and beam architecture and wide plank floors which are evident throughout reflect the expert craftsmanship of the Federal period. The large barn and silo base, now used to raise the American flag, are reminiscent of its early farming roots. The main building is currently listed on Vermont’s Historic Register and is certified as a “Green Hotel in the Green Mountain State.”

Purchased in 1985, Debra and Jim lovingly restored and transformed their home into a very comfortable B & B offering travelers the opportunity to experience a way of life that is becoming harder to find. Debra is a stay at home Mom, award winning quilter and instructor, landscape designer, cuisiner, Long Trail End-to-Ender, nature nut and ski bum! Jim works nearby in Northfield and keeps the inn in excellent shape and tries very hard to keep up with all the ideas for improving life on the “flats.” He’s an excellent skier, basketball fanatic and a real nice guy, too! Hilary, our teenage daughter, besides keeping us on our toes, loves to ride Strawberry and cury Cowboy, our two resident horses.

Johnnycake Flats is 16 acres of field, forest, frog ponds, organic flower and vegetable gardens, a chicken coop, a screened porch and home to Lila & Brumby (2 loveable border collies), Timothy (the barn cat) , Strawberry & Cowboy, assorted chickens and other small creatures.

Guests are welcome to use the inn’s snowshoes, sleds, day packs, coolers and horseshoes. So come, unwind and experience the peacefulness and natural beauty that abound in our special corner of Vermont.
